European Commission increases cod quotas

Incredibly, on 18 December 2008, the European Commission decided to increase the cod quota for the North Sea by 30%. This despite cod numbers having decreased by over 90% since the 1970s and seeing no sign of recovery. It also increased the quotas for other endangered fish such as monkfish by 8% and plaice by 13%.

Greenpeace said that the new quotas went against all scientific evidence which recommended a total ban.
